Why encaustics?
Wax is an ancient artistic medium used originally to repair broken clay vessels and caulk boats. By adding pigments and resin into the wax a paint was created. Being non reactive to other materials, impervious to moisture/mold and instant drying, this medium is extremely versatile.
Supplies needed: (the first 3 items are the most important)
(CJAS) Cheap Joes Art Stuff
- heated palette (CJAS) or electric griddle (WalMart).
- heat gun (CJAS) or propane torch (WalMart or Lowe’s).
- R&F Starter Kit (CJAS, preferred for contents).
- cradled hardboard panel ~8 x10” (CJAS). (included in starter kit)
- a variety of cheap chip brushes. (CJAS, Lowe’s).
- Encaustic Medium (CJAS).
- oil pastels (CJAS).
- oil paint for custom colors (CJAS).
- small metal tins (CJAS) or empty tuna cans work.
- variety of encaustic paint colors (CJAS).
- carving and scribing tools. (loop tool, CJAS).
- anything for mixed media; paper, wood, metal, etc.
- cloth rags.
this list could go on but that will get you more than you will need for now.
About the Artist:
Chris Craft is a fine artist with a long commercial art history. He has painted for most of his life in a variety of styles and media. But, encaustic abstract paintings are his passion where he experiments with color and sculptural texture. Craft layers the melted wax with different techniques, including actually painting with the flame.
